Making the timber supply chain more bushfire resilient

Making the timber supply chain more bushfire resilient

17 July 2025

The 2019-20 bushfires caused major damage to timber resources on both public and private land within the north east NSW region.  This project sought to explore how the region’s timber supply chain might be better protected in the future.

Raising awareness of forestry values in Bushfire Risk Management Plans was identified as a key opportunity and a pilot was undertaken to demonstrate how this can occur. The report also identified that much more could be done to reduce the risk of damaging fire by focusing on the following strategies:

  • Hazard reduction within key timber supply source areas
  • Hazard reduction off-estate in fire paths toward key timber supply source areas
  • Identification and maintenance of strategic trail networks
  • Early detection and control of new fires while small
