North East
NSW is one of the most forested regions in Australia with two thirds of all
land supporting tree cover.
Much of the region experiences high rainfall, has
productive soil and a long growing season, making it highly suitable for
growing tall timber trees.
Forestry in
the region is categorised into two sectors – hardwood and softwood.
Hardwood is
the dominant sector sourcing its wood from native eucalypt working forests and eucalypt
plantations which are widespread across the region.
The
softwood sector obtains its wood from Radiata Pine plantations grown on the
northern tablelands and Southern Pine plantations grown on the north coast and
hinterland.
